Green Mountain Boys' State Activities

Dignitaries
To give the boys who attend a better sense of the reality of their government, m any local and state officials visit during the week. Some formally address the group while others are on hand to answer questions and offer advice to the "citizens." Resource experts from many fields are invited as a regular part of the program. The Governor of Vermont add resses the "citizens'" assembly each year.

Special Activities
Band
You are encouraged to join the band which performs daily. You may do so by immed iately visiting the Band Director after you have checked in with your town. It is important that all musicians see the Band Director prior to the evening meal. The time and place of each rehearsal and performance is listed in the daily sche dule.

Newspaper
You are encouraged to join the newspaper staff which publishes the Green Mountai n Boys' Statement daily. You may do so by attending the first newspaper meeting which will be held at 5:45PM at the Newspaper Office.

Life Guards
Lifeguards, with the help of a Norwich University lifeguard, are needed daily to watch out for others during afternoon swimming. You may become one by reporting at 5:45PM to the Athletic Di rector's Office.

Colorguard
A five man colorguard advances and retrieves colors at the evening assembly on t he day specified for your town. You may be selected by contacting your Town Counselor. Previous experience is no t necessary. The American Legion colorguard for Sunday evening's program will instruct prospective colorguards. A few minutes before the Sunday evening assembly you can learn by watching the L egion Corps.

Special Athletics
Past Boys' Staters have organized tennis competitions, recreational running and ultimate frisbee competitions. In planning such events, consult the Athletic Director for scheduling, facilities, equipment and special rules.

Awards
Scholarships You are invited to apply for any of the scholarships offered to Boys' State part icipants. To do so, you must fill out an application which can be obtained from your Town Counselor. In addition, you mus t have your high school transcript sent to:

Boys' Nation
Two outstanding Boys' State participants will be selected by the counselors to r epresent Vermont at Boys' Nation which will be held each year during July on the American University campus in Washington, D C. A great deal of attention is devoted by the counselors to this selection. The process continues throughout the week.

Town Hall of Fame
In addition, your counselors will select one citizen to receive the Town Hall of Fame Award for outstanding service to the town.

Model Town
At the closing ceremony the Director of Boys' State will announce the Model Town for this year's Boys' State. Many qualities go into the selection of the Model Town. The significance of this award is large ly determined by the members of each Boys' State town, their desire to be recognized as Model Town, and the effort they put into that goal. The selection is based on material and evidence submitted by town members and counselors during the course of the week that support the established criteria.
